Success Factor #8 - Rewards
You reap what you sow. A company that fails to properly align behaviors, expectations, results, and rewards will fail to harvest a fruitful project. Alignment is even more critical with transformations because there is always resistance to change.
One entity we worked with helped to ensure success by having a multi-layer reward program for their projects. For operations, the project’s success was included in leadership’s annual goals and compensation. Project team-members had similar financial rewards. Additionally, to aid in team-building and keeping team member engagement high, there were milestone parties and a free masseuse when the team was pulling long hours working on a project deliverable.
Recommendations:
1. Project and operational leaders must demonstrate the desired project behaviors and recognize them when exhibited by team-members.
2. Align personal goals to the project goals.
3. Make it fun! The stakes are high and so is the stress. Gamification of solutions, parties, birthday recognitions, bringing in a masseuse, event tickets, etc.
